cool like that

I was going to post this huge political/military blog but decided instead to stick with my usual. Mainly a little advice for a running Zeb I know. Don't over do it. Training takes months, this is not like cramming for a final (from what I've heard) and be fit into an all-nighter. And yeah, 70 miles a week sounds like a lot because it is!

This falls into the hot dog category of my life. I don't want to know anything about how it's made. As far as I'm concerned, it magically appears on the shelves of supermarkets, or maybe elves put them there. What scares me when I read this article was the use of adjectives. "The FDA concluded that cloned animals are 'virtually indistinguishable' from conventional livestock..." Uh-huh. Virtually... Not as reassuring as you think huh? I've had some cooking that are virtually indistinguishable from cardboard or leather, so umm, is it cardboard or leather? Nope, it was food with all of the dietary benefits of regular food but tasted like cardboard.

OK, now its time to go eat some cloned food.

i wish i could be accused of overdoing it. yesterday my running partner suggested i gear up to run a whole mile without walking, and i looked at him in utter horror. a WHOLE MILE. my 2007 resolution is to be less of a cream puff; we shall see how that goes.

running is easy. running for a long distance well is a challenge.
(this will only work up to a certain point)
don't focus on your feet, the pain in your legs, or any pain for that matter. focus on controlling your breathing. in through the nose, out through the mouth. yeah, it sounds stupid but focusing on that, heck focus on the fact that it sounds stupid but do it. don't worry about your feet or how far you've gone. just focus about your breathing. you've been walking a long time, your feet know not to trip over each other (although you are accident-prone) figure out a rhythm while you run. are you breathing when your left foot hits the ground? also, you can focus on your arms. not just keeping them pumping at your sides, but the tension. arms should be sort of loose, barely able to keep themselves up. don't tense up in the shoulders and don't clench your fists (like you're going to hit me) hands should be closed but not tightly.
if want a decent rule of thumb of how fast you should go, time yourself walking 1 mile at a good pace, not so fast you're out of breath but not like you're window shopping. divide in half.
are you rolling (front to back) off your feet? or is it more of a stomping? like you can hear your feet in your head. the curse of the slippas, stomping around. try to roll your feet, land towards your heel, roll forward and push off with the toes. the next day i promise your calves will burn like crazy so eat a banana after your run.

oh. and buy a pair of running shoes, just for running. only walking they should be doing is outside to stretch. no walking around to do shopping in them. insoles are good too, find something you like. then socks. cotton (duh) but thickness matters too, as well as length. small things add up to bigger things.
