the birthday blog

Blogging to allow time for food to settle in between Thanksgiving meals. Had an interesting thought, people across the nation are giving thanks today and it's my birthday. Would it be narcissistic of me to assume that these people are giving thanks for my birth? Nah, I don't think so.

Let's see what stupid things people have done today on Thanksgiving. Here's a classic one. There's always one story like this every year. You'd think that people would learn and take precautions against this but then it wouldn't be a classic. Maybe Google should do something about that, like make the first link when you google (sorry, using it as a verb) "deep fry turkey" would be a news story like this. Or maybe a YouTube video. Get this info out there to the public. Deep fry + turkey = danger.

Tell me that this isn't wrong. Admission is food donations, you go in and throw food down an ice rink to try and knock over pins. I don't think that's a waste of food huh? And it's a wonder why other countries hate us. There's hungry people here and would eat the "discarded" turkeys. Heck, they'd probably still eat it after it's been bowled but that's not the point. We're literally throwing food away. Perfectly good food. What's wrong with us?

This isn't exactly the right thing to do. It took the use of the Jaws of Life to free the people, what the hell were the teens going to do? Probably nothing. Best to just stay out of the way. They're kids, probably in shock of what happened. Don't expect everyone to be a hero. On the flip side, you don't order food while you wait. That's just not cool, unless you're ordering for everyone. To the writer, you can't suffer from fatal chest injuries. You can die from fatal chest injuries but when you write "suffered from fatal chest injuries" it almost sounds like they're still alive. Kinda like how the elderly woman "suffered from abdominal and leg injuries" she's still suffering from them but the guy probably isn't suffering. Just saying.

It's people like this that make the criminal justice system what it is. I know it's bad, you got 4 days in jail. That's a tough break, but now you're looking at a much longer time maybe 7 days for tampering. Was the risk worth the gain? OK, he probably scratched it off so there was no record of him ever being in jail, that sort of black mark on a record would be bad for anyone. Still, you take your lumps and you move on. There's plenty of ways to justify driving with a suspended license, but you really can't justify tampering with public records (not unless you're James Bond).

Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thanks for addressing the enormous problem of Americans throwing food away. Some people really don't have any skills for managing their pantries. But think of all the money that could be saved by a little planning! I've got some post-Thanksgiving anti-food waste tips and a simple lesson in home economics at my blog, for those readers who could use some tips for getting the most out of their monthly food budget.
